In the Employee Spotlight we aim to recognize a Youth Service, Inc. employee making an impact in the communities we serve. Jemetra Harvey-Gordon is the administrative assistant at Youth Service, Inc.’s Youth Emergency Service (YES) program.
Q: Tell us a little bit about yourself and your background.
I am a native Philadelphian and a graduate of John Bartram High School. I met the love of my life on the 31 bus in 2009. There are many activities that I enjoy. I am a wife and mother who enjoys cooking and baking, family time and taking care of others. I love reading and Sister Soulja is my favorite author. Shopping is one of my other favorite activities. I consider myself the “Sunshine for My Family & Friends.”
Q: How long have you been working at YSI?
I have been at YSI for 13 years. I first came to Youth Service Inc. October 2, 2006 as a Foster Care Administrative Assistant. I managed the daily activities and cases, ensuring compliance with state regulations, for the program until it ended in 2009. Then I became the Receptionist/ Administrative assistant for YSI’s main office from 2009-2015, when I transferred to Youth Emergency Service (YES) Teen Shelter, where I happily am today.
Q: Why do you think these programs are important?
I believe these programs are very important to our community. Since working here at the teen shelter, I have encountered many homeless youth and have seen the many good things that YES has done with and for the youth such as getting them back into school, starting jobs, setting goals and successfully reunifying with their families.
Q: What do you enjoy most about working at YSI in this program?
What I enjoy most about working here at the Teen shelter is, getting to know each youth individually. Most of the time youth return after being discharged to share their success stories such as finishing school or maintaining employment or just simply making it work at home. I praise them and continue to encourage them to do their very best, because that is the YES way!
