In the Employee Spotlight we recognize a Youth Service, Inc. employee making an impact in the communities we serve. Megan Steelman is the Executive Assistant at YSI.

Q: Tell us a little bit about yourself and your background.

My professional career is divided from before and after adopting our daughter.  I earned my MSW at Hunter College Graduate School of Social Work and worked for many years as a social worker, including as a Team Leader of a Mental Health Outreach Team in New York City and the Intake Supervisor of Older Adult Protective Services at Philadelphia Corporation for Aging. After adopting our daughter from the foster care system at the age of seven, I took a year off to volunteer in her school. That volunteer experience led to my being employed by her charter school as their HR, Compliance Manager & Registrar. After many happy years at that school, the CEO left for another organization and asked me join her there. When she left that organization, I decided to look for a change also, which brought me to YSI.

The Executive Assistant position at YSI interested me, because it brought be back to a social service organization and seemed like a good match with my administrative skills.

Q: How long have you been working at YSI and it what program(s)?

I’ve been at YSI for almost two and half years as the Executive Assistant to the Executive Director.

Q: What are some of the biggest challenges faced by you working in these programs?

The biggest challenge is getting staff to understand the importance of being in compliance with training requirements for their programs.

Q: What do you do to overcome these challenges?

I rely on Supervisors to follow up with the staff they supervise. Trying to ensure that programs are in compliance with state and local requirements, so that no issues are found at the time of audits is what keeps me motivated each day.

Q: What is one of your favorite success stories during your time at YSI?

I am excited about the affiliation between YSI and PEC; I feel there is potential for great programming.

Q: What do you enjoy most about working in this program and at YSI?

I enjoy getting to interact with staff from all YSI programs.
