In the Volunteer Spotlight we recognize a Youth Service, Inc. volunteer making an impact in the communities we serve. Rachel Dettrey volunteers at Baring House Crisis Nursery.

Q: Tell us a little bit about yourself and your background.

Rachel: My name is Rachel Dettrey. I am from the Philadelphia region originally and am currently a Junior obtaining my bachelors of Social Work at Temple University. I am planning to also get my Masters of Social work in an effort continue to support and empower the most vulnerable populations.

Q: How long have you been volunteering at YSI?

Rachel: I have been volunteering at YSI since January and relishing every moment of my volunteer work for the past 4 months.

Q: Why did you choose YSI when you were looking for a place to volunteer?

Rachel:I chose YSI as a place to volunteer because of the importance of serving our most vulnerable populations and the necessity of investing in the futures of Philadelphia’s youth. I am very passionate about ensuring the healthy development of the next generation and offering my support to combat inequity, disparity, and childhood abuse and neglect, as well as liberate the most disadvantaged and vulnerable demographics that YSI serves. Through investing in the empowerment and healthy development of Philadelphia’s youth, we are investing in the future of Philadelphia. I have been blessed to form the bonds and memories that I have with the staff, volunteers and children at the crisis nursery and am able to watch the beautiful growth and love that YSI harnesses in their programs.

Q: Why do you think it is important to volunteer?

Rachel:I believe that it is important to volunteer because I feel that it is our duty as human beings to offer our support and advocacy for those less fortunate than ourselves. It is the quest of all human beings to fight for the success and empowerment of our counterparts in our communities.  It is imperative that we utilize our power and privilege to alleviate the struggle of those stripped of the same opportunities and resources granted to us. Through being a volunteer, I am working as an advocate, ally and as a safe support network for those who need it most.
